Significance
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and god of wisdom. It is especially grand in Maharashtra and other western and southern states.
Mythology & Legend
According to the Shiva Purana, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from turmeric paste to guard her door. When Lord Shiva returned and was denied entry, he beheaded Ganesha. To pacify Parvati, Shiva placed an elephant head on Ganesha and revived him, declaring him the first to be worshipped in any ritual.
