Significance
Hartalika Teej is observed by women for the longevity of their husbands and a happy married life. It falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya. Women observe a nirjala fast and worship Parvati and Shiva.
Mythology & Legend
According to the Shiva Purana, Parvati observed a strict fast and prayed to win Shiva as her husband. Her friend (sakhi) took her to a forest so her father could not marry her to Vishnu. The word Hartalika is derived from "harit" (abduction) and "aalika" (friend). Shiva was pleased and accepted Parvati.
