Significance
Thaipusam is celebrated by Tamils when the star Pusam coincides with the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai. Devotees carry kavadi (burdens) and pierce their bodies as acts of devotion to Murugan.
Mythology & Legend
According to the Skanda Purana, Goddess Parvati gave Murugan a vel (spear) to defeat Surapadman. Thaipusam commemorates this. Idumban (a devotee) carried two hills as kavadi; the kavadi tradition honours his devotion and Murugan's grace.
