Significance
Tukaram Beej marks the birth anniversary of Sant Tukaram, the great Marathi saint and poet. He composed abhangas in praise of Vitthal (Vithoba) and stressed devotion and equality.
Mythology & Legend
According to the Tukaram Gatha and Janabai's abhangas, Tukaram was a grocer who lost his family and turned to Vitthal. He received the mantra in a dream and composed thousands of abhangas. He is considered a successor to Jnaneshwar and Namdev in the Varkari tradition.
Rituals & Observances
- At dawn, offer flowers and incense to Vitthal or Tukaram's image.
- Sing or listen to Tukaram's abhangas; participate in kirtan or bhajan.
- Visit Dehu (his birthplace) or Pandharpur if possible; take a dindi (pilgrimage).
- Observe a sattvic diet; donate to the needy.
