Significance
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Jayanti marks the birth of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the saint who spread the sankirtan movement and the worship of Radha-Krishna in Bengal and Odisha.
Mythology & Legend
According to the Chaitanya Charitamrita, Chaitanya was born in Navadvipa (Bengal) and later took sannyasa. He emphasised the congregational chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra and the mood of Radha's love for Krishna. He is considered an avatar of Krishna by Gaudiya Vaishnavas.
Rituals & Observances
- At dawn, offer flowers and incense to Chaitanya or Radha-Krishna.
- Chant the Hare Krishna mantra: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare; Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare.
- Participate in sankirtan (kirtan) and processions; read the Chaitanya Charitamrita.
- Visit Mayapur or Puri if possible; observe a sattvic diet.
