Significance
Guru Nanak Jayanti marks the birth of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism. It is celebrated on the full moon of Kartik. Sikhs and many others honour his message of one God, equality, and selfless service.
Mythology & Legend
According to the Janamsakhis and Guru Granth Sahib, Guru Nanak was born in 1469 at Talwandi (Nankana Sahib). He preached Ik Onkar (one God), rejected caste, and emphasised naam simran and seva. His travels (udasis) spread his message across India and beyond.
Rituals & Observances
- At dawn, visit the gurudwara and participate in the Prabhat Pheri (early morning procession).
- Listen to kirtan and katha (Guru's life and teachings); partake in langar.
- Offer flowers and recite from Guru Granth Sahib; meditate on Waheguru.
- In the evening, join the Nagar Kirtan (procession) with the Guru Granth Sahib.
