Significance

Hanuman Jayanti celebrates the birth of Lord Hanuman, the devoted servant of Rama and symbol of strength, devotion, and bhakti. It falls on Chaitra Purnima in North India and in other months in South India.

Mythology & Legend

According to the Ramayana and Shiva Purana, Hanuman was born to Anjana and Kesari (or Vayu) with the blessing of Shiva. He is an incarnation of Shiva and devoted to Rama. He played a key role in the Ramayana—finding Sita, carrying the Sanjeevani mountain, and setting Lanka ablaze.

Rituals & Observances

  1. At sunrise, take a bath and offer sindoor and red flowers to Hanuman.
  2. Recite Hanuman Chalisa and Sunderkand; offer bananas and besan ladoo.
  3. Visit a Hanuman temple; apply tilak and offer prasad.
  4. Observe a fruit diet or fast; avoid alcohol and non-vegetarian food.
  5. In the evening, perform aarti and distribute prasad to the needy.
