Vaikunta Ekadashi

Significance

Vaikunta Ekadashi is considered the most auspicious Ekadashi. The gates of Vaikunta (Vishnu's abode) are believed to open on this day. Devotees fast and keep vigil to attain liberation.

Mythology & Legend

According to the Padma Purana, the demon Muran was defeated by Vishnu on this day. Vishnu declared that those who observe this Ekadashi would have the gates of Vaikunta open for them. In South India, it is associated with the opening of the Vaikunta Dwaram in temples.

Rituals & Observances

  1. Observe a full fast or fruit-and-milk fast from sunrise to next sunrise.
  2. Visit a Vishnu temple and pass through the Vaikunta Dwaram (gate) if available.
  3. Chant Vishnu mantras and recite the Vishnu Sahasranama or Bhagavad Gita.
  4. Stay awake at night (Jagaran) and listen to or sing devotional songs.
  5. Break the fast on Dwadashi after offering puja and prasad.
