Significance

Valmiki Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Sage Valmiki, the author of the Ramayana. It is observed on the full moon of Ashwin. Devotees recite the Ramayana and honour the sage.

Mythology & Legend

According to tradition, Valmiki was a robber transformed by the grace of the seven sages. He composed the Ramayana—the first Sanskrit epic—and gave shelter to Sita and her sons Lava and Kusha. The Ramayana narrates the life of Rama and is recited for merit.
