Significance

Buddha Purnima marks the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of Gautama Buddha. It is celebrated on the full moon of Vaisakha. Buddhists and many Hindus honour the day with meditation and charity.

Mythology & Legend

According to Buddhist texts, the Buddha was born in Lumbini, attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, and passed away at Kushinagar—all on the full moon of Vaisakha. The day is a reminder of his teachings: the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path.

  1. At dawn, visit a Buddhist temple or stupa; offer flowers, incense, and lamps.
  2. Meditate and recite the Triple Gem (Buddham sharanam, Dhammam sharanam, Sangham sharanam).
