Significance
Mahavir Jayanti marks the birth of Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. Jains observe the day with temple visits, fasting, and recitation of sacred texts.
Mythology & Legend
According to Jain tradition, Mahavira was born in Kundagrama (Bihar) to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala. He renounced the world at 30 and attained kevala jnana (omniscience) after 12 years of austerity. He preached ahimsa, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, and aparigraha.
Rituals & Observances
- Visit Jain temples and offer flowers, fruits, and rice to the idol of Mahavira.
- Recite the Kalpa Sutra (which narrates his birth and life); participate in processions.
- Observe fasting or a simple diet; avoid root vegetables and after-sunset meals.
- Donate to the needy and practise ahimsa; refrain from harming any living being.
