Significance
Ugadi is the New Year for the people of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, falling on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. Ugadi Pachadi (six tastes) is eaten to symbolise the flavours of life.
Mythology & Legend
According to the Brahma Purana, Brahma began creation on this day. The Shalivahana Shaka calendar starts from Ugadi. The Pachadi (Bevu Bella in Karnataka) with six tastes represents the mix of joy, sorrow, and other experiences in the coming year.
Rituals & Observances
- At dawn, take an oil bath and wear new clothes.
- Prepare Ugadi Pachadi (sour, sweet, bitter, tangy, salty, spicy) and consume it first.
- Draw rangoli and hang mango leaves at the door; listen to the Panchangam (yearly forecast).
- Visit the temple and offer puja; exchange greetings and gifts.
