Significance
Amavasya — the New Moon — is the fifteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha, associated with the Pitris (ancestors). The most important day for Tarpanam and Shraddha — offerings to departed ancestors. Somvati Amavasya (falling on a Monday) is especially significant. Kartik Amavasya hosts Diwali; Mahalaya Amavasya marks the start of Devi Paksha before Navratri.
